Transparency and affiliatesThe three layers
Base layer, insulation and a waterproof shell. This is the foundation of everything.
Thermal base layer
Best for
A first full day on snow, when you still don't know how much you will sweat.
Objective criteria
- Fast-drying fabric (merino wool or synthetic)
- Flat seams
- Snug fit without compression
One limitation
Merino wool usually costs a lot more than synthetic and needs more careful washing.

An adjustable mid layer for days with changing temperatures.

Extremities
Hands, feet and head get cold first, and they are what most often ruins a day on snow.
Gloves or mittens
Best for
Keeping hands dry and warm all day.
Objective criteria
- Long cuff over the sleeve
- Removable or fast-drying liner
- Reinforced palm
One limitation
Mittens are warmer but make tasks that need separate fingers harder.

Mercado LivreAmazon BrasilDecathlonSki/snowboard socks
Best for
Wearing inside the boot, with no folds and no cotton.
Objective criteria
- Tall cuff above the boot
- Thin to medium thickness
- No bulky toe seam
One limitation
A very thick sock can compress the foot inside the boot and make cold worse.

Best for
Everyday use on the slope, for adults and children.
Objective criteria
- Visible safety certification
- Firm fit with no pressure points
- Adjustable venting
One limitation
A helmet is a personal-fit item: buying without trying it on raises the risk of a poor fit.

Buy, bring or rent
Not everything needs to be bought. This is the split we use on our own trips.
Buy
Items in direct contact with your body and sized personally: base layers, socks, gloves, goggles and, if you travel often, a helmet.
Bring
Outerwear you already own and that still fits. It doesn't need to be new to work.
Rent
Skis, board, boots and — for growing children — essentially all the technical equipment.
