Pants, salopette or bib: what really changes
A salopette (or bib, in US brand vocabulary) is a pant with a chest panel and braces. The advantage is not cosmetic: it rises above the waist and blocks snow at your back when you sit, fall or get up with the board. For beginner snowboarding, where sitting falls are routine, that detail avoids snow melting on your lower back.
Regular pants are easier to put on and take off, keep the torso cooler and work better on sunny days near freezing. In neither case does the cut replace waterproofing: a salopette without taped seams still soaks through.
None of the 15 models verified here is sold as a salopette: they are all pants. We prefer to record that rather than point you at a product we did not check. If your case is deep snow or a small child, look for salopette, macacão, bib or overall in the listing and check for taped seams.
- Taped seams: the figure that most changes the outcome in wet snow; few listings state it.
- Water column: 3,000 mm handles an ordinary resort day; below that, expect short use.
- Insulation in grams: 85 g is general use; 120 g is a long cold day; an uninsulated shell needs layers.
- Gaiters and boot zips: sealing at the ankle, where snow gets in first.
- 600D reinforcement: prevents tears from ski edges and boot rub.

Buying on Amazon US: import warnings
The seven dollar-priced models here are listings on Amazon.com in the United States. They make sense for travellers passing through the country who can receive the order at a US address — a hotel, a friend's home or a forwarding service. We promise delivery to Brazil for none of them.
The dollar price is not the final cost. Add US domestic shipping, your card's exchange rate, IOF and, if the item comes to Brazil, whatever import taxation applies on the purchase date. A US$ 45 pant can end up well above that in reais.
Sizing is the second risk. Grids are American, with waist and inseam in inches, and international returns are usually impractical. Prefer listings with a size chart — Amazon Essentials and Arctix have one — and measure the waist and inseam of a pant you already own.

A softshell is not a waterproof shell. Two listings here state rain protection of about 10 to 15 minutes — that is water resistance.

For two or three resort days with dry snow and morning outings, the padded Black Sand (R$ 142.40) is the Brazilian option with the most accumulated reviews. On Amazon, Amazon Essentials (US$ 34.40) is the most predictable buy, sold and shipped by Amazon.com with a size chart.
At this level, accept the trade-off: neither states a water column in millimetres.

By profile: a ski week, balancing price and specification
For a week of skiing, the Ushuaia Conquista (R$ 426.55) is the only Brazilian listing in our research stating taped seams and a 3,000 mm water column. On the US side, FREE SOLDIER (US$ 62.99) states fully taped seams and 120 g insulation, and the Arctix Mountain (US$ 78.99) adds a boot zip and gripper gaiters.
This is the band where technical data stops being a generic promise and is actually written in the listing.

By profile: frequent skiers
If you travel to the snow every year, you gain more from building a layering system than from buying a warmer pant. The North Face Freedom (US$ 170.00) is a pure shell with no insulation: you tune warmth with the base layer and, in deep cold, a mid layer. The Columbia Midweight (R$ 505.08) is that base layer — not a shell.
The Slide 700 Wedze (R$ 449.99) and the Quechua SH500 X-Warm (R$ 436.49) sit between the two ideas: ski-line and hiking shells bought in Brazil, with no need for a US address.

Is a salopette better than snow pants?
It depends on the use. A salopette blocks snow at your back and helps in deep snow, with frequent falls and with children. Pants are easier to put on and cooler on mild days. Neither makes up for missing taped seams.
Can I use thermal leggings instead of snow pants?
No. A base layer, like the Columbia Midweight here, is the under layer: it manages sweat and keeps warmth, but does not protect against wind, snow and abrasion. It goes under the shell, not instead of it.
How many millimetres of water column do I need?
For an ordinary resort day, 3,000 mm is enough. For wet snow, rain or full days sitting in the snow, look for higher figures and taped seams. Most listings we checked state no such number — when they don't, treat it as short use.
Is it worth buying on Amazon US?
It is worth it if you have a US address to receive the order. Dollar prices are attractive and spec sheets are more detailed, but add shipping, exchange rate, IOF and any import taxation before comparing with the Brazilian price.
What is an ASIN mismatch and why does it matter?

- Base layer
- The piece in direct contact with the skin. Its main job is not warmth but moving sweat away from the body. Usual materials: merino wool and technical synthetics. Cotton is discouraged because it holds moisture.
- Mid layer
- The intermediate layer responsible for insulation: fleece, microfleece or light down. It is the piece you add or remove according to the temperature of the day.
- Shell / outer layer
- The outer layer, responsible for blocking wind and water. It can be a hardshell (stiff, no insulation) or an insulated jacket, combining barrier and thermal filling.
- Waterproof rating (mm)
- Measured in millimetres of water column. Around 5,000 mm suits dry snow and light use; 10,000 to 20,000 mm covers wet days, heavy snow and long use.
- Taped seams
- Heat-applied tape inside the seams to stop water entering through needle holes. “Fully taped” protects more than “critically taped”.
- Inner gaiters
- Elastic cuffs at the trouser hem that sit over the boot, blocking snow and wind at the shin.
- Regular and goofy
- The two possible stances on the board: regular rides with the left foot forward, goofy with the right. Neither is superior — it depends on your natural posture.
